Writing doesn't have to be so hard

Do you hate loathe having to write anything longer than an email because it's so hard for you it's almost physically painful?

Do you find it easier to write when you can tell somebody about your ideas before you start writing?

Me too!

I don’t know about you, but when I  explain my thoughts out loud, that seems to knock something loose in my brain. When I tell another person what I want to say, I even start understanding it better myself!

READY TO TALK ABOUT IT?
ME TOO!

A colourful variety of citrus fruits, cut in half horizontally, is arranged on a chopping board. Next to it is a stainless steel hand-operated juicer. By the top left corner of board are 3 whole oranges, with leaves still attached.

Is This You?

  • You need to finish your website, your blog post, your marketing email. With only yourself to answer to and no firm deadline, you keep putting it off because it’s sooo overwhelming and you never  think it’s good enough.
  • If you could only post nothing but videos on your site, it would be so much easier. You’re so much better at talking than writing.
  • You’ve got a proposal due in three days. It’s not even long, but it’s important for your business. You’ve had it on your plate for over a month, but you’re still struggling to write about yourself and what you offer. If you could just do a presentation, you know you’d totally nail it.
...   So you’ve ended up setting the writing aside again and again while you do other things — and now your house is sparkling, your laundry is done and even put away, and the dog has had his bath. ANYTHING is better than staring at that blinking cursor on a blank screen.

Even the rising tide of anxiety you feel with each passing day isn’t enough to make you do it now.

Managing the anxiety is as exhausting and stressful as the writing task itself.

Even the stress is stressful!

There is a better way to get writing done. Systematically. With way less agonizing.

Work with me and we’ll find your way together.

White Sheet

There is nothing wrong with you.
You are not broken.
You don't need fixing.

It's just that what you were taught about writing doesn't work for you.
Maybe all you need is to learn some workarounds for your beautiful brain.
There’s nothing wrong with that.

One more time, say it with me:
There's nothing wrong with you.

Hi, I'm Dee.

I’m an ADHD Writing Coach with ADHD myself. I help neurodivergent entrepreneurs whose work requires writing and who find writing so hard it’s almost physically painful.

If that’s you … I’m right with you!

In fact, I used to hate writing. I didn’t know why, I just knew it took more mental effort than I could muster up. I now know that’s actually physically true—the brain does have a physical component that needs replenishing, especially when, like me, you have a dozen trains of thought derailing in your mind all the time.

And yet, somehow, I’ve always worked with words, as a writer, editor, teacher. And as I learned more about writing and more about my ADHD brain, I learned how to love the entire writing process, even the hard parts.

Over the past 30 years, I’ve also helped hundreds of people learn about writing, in groups and in individual sessions.

Maybe I can help you too.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

I'm ENJOYING blogging regularly, thanks to you.

I'd MUCH rather talk than write, so finding you made my business POSSIBLE! You ask incisive questions from a reader-orientation I can't possibly take on WHILE ALSO feeling vulnerable writing to them.

With your help, I spontaneously blurt out great stuff to transcribe (after complaining and venting), because you're not only a good listener -- you know what my people want to read. You play the role of my audience AND my confidante -- interactively -- and somehow get me to say brilliant things.

I keep asking questions until we’ve come up with a road map for your writing project. After our session, you follow the map and let your writing flow.

If you need help with revising and proofreading, I can help you with that too.

We’ll do whatever you need to make the whole process of writing less painful and—who knows?—maybe even joyful.

How It Works

You talk, I listen.
I ask questions.
You get clearer and clearer.

The Back Story

I stumbled upon a way of helping people with writing projects many years ago, when I worked with post-secondary students with ADHD and/or learning disabilities.

Students would come to me with an essay they needed help writing. Based on my own experience of what works for me, I developed a system: they’d tell me what they wanted to say and I’d take notes while they talked. By the end of an hour, they’d have a starting point and a plan. They’d come back with their first draft and we’d go over it together so they could learn what to look for when revising their own work.

Every one of them succeeded in writing with less pain and better results.

Work With Me

I’m most interested in the big picture, not your spelling or grammar or punctuation.

Sure, those things are important—and you might believe that’s what you need to learn.

But I’ve found that’s rarely the case.

Usually, what people really need is to know that the writing they’re putting out into the world actually says what they meant to say, and says it clearly and coherently, with a logical flow from one sentence to the next.

These things are not about grammar or punctuation.

They’re about panning for gold—sifting through all the information and ideas to find the important stuff and filter out the rest.

They’re about organization and planning, figuring out what’s relevant and giving your ideas a structure to hang on, before you write a single word, let alone worry about grammar.

They’re about considering your purpose and your audience before you even decide on a structure.

Wouldn't it be amazing to have a helping hand?
